Prior Learning Recognition
An alternative learning pathway
Recognised Prior Learning - RPL - formally recognises what you may have already informally learned from work experience, life experience, and any other training you’ve previously undertaken.
If you are able to demonstrate your competence against the learning outcomes of each module you may not need to complete the entire formal training program required to attain a qualification.
Program Structure & Process

1. Create an Evidence Portfolio
Your assessor will assist you to create a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates your competence.
There are four parts to your portfolio:
- Supporting Documents
Your portfolio will need to include these supporting documents:
- A current job description
- An up to date Curriculum Vitae
- Copies of any previous certificates and qualifications you have attained
- Workplace Documents
This kit contains a checklist of common workplace documents associated with OHS. To demonstrate your competence, you simply submit examples of each that you have prepared. These are then assessed against the relevant learning outcomes.
- Third Party Evidence Report (minimum of 2)
Completed by your workplace supervisor, manager or colleagues these reports will be used to further validate your skills, experience and knowledge.
- OHS General Knowledge Quiz
This quiz is used to determine your general knowledge across all combined units. You can choose to take this test orally with your assessor or complete a printed version.
2. Assessment
Assessment is competency based and straightforward. All evidence you submit will be assessed as either - "competent" or "not yet competent" against the required units of competency.
3. Supplemental Learning
You will gain formal recognition for each of the units that you are able to demonstrate competence in.
For those units where further evidence of competence is required your assigned assessor will recommend:
- Gathering alternative evidence
- Distance learning module/s
- A workplace site visit
4. Qualification Attained
Once all four parts of your portfolio (plus any supplemental learning activities) have been assessed as competent you’ll then receive your OHS qualification.
Timing
This self-paced program has been designed to be completed within six weeks. This is dependent on how quickly you are able to gather and submit evidence for assessment.
Below is a typical timeframe for completion:
